Classroom Art for School Auction

Recently I was asked by my daughter’s second grade teacher to create an art piece for the school auction. She was looking for something the kids could be included in, but also something that could be framed inexpensively. I had to think quickly for this one, as we only had 2 weeks to create a project with 27 kids, edit, print, and frame…eek! Luckily we created a really unique piece of classroom art for the school auction.

We came up with this simple to create project for the kids, you can be quite proud of and it’s simple enough to put together + inexpensive to create on a school budget.

We took quite a few different shots and used our favorite photo edited program PicMonkey to create the verbiage inside the heart. If you aren’t familiar with PicMonkey, it’s not only the coolest photo editing program, it’s simple to use for anyone looking to spruce up photos online. I’m honestly, in love with it! By adding some fun quotes inside the heart using a software program, it gave the heart an added piece that all the teachers, and parents really enjoyed.

  1. To create this photo, we first grabbed a 6ft ladder and then a nice place out on the basketball courts at the school. The sun wasn’t shining too bright this day, which worked to our advantage for the photos.
  2. Next we traced a larger than life heart shape using chalk.
  3. Have each child lay on their stomach, with their hands extended out to reach over the heart shape. Basically to cover the chalk shape (if you can). This can be challenging depending on how many students you have. We had 27 total. Took a few tries to squeeze everyone in, but overall the whole process only took about 15 minutes.
  4. Once I got home I downloaded the photos to begin editing and then of course printing. I sent my photos over to Costco to print, but you could choose anywhere that works best for you.

Below you can see the kids laying down to create the artwork. This is the photo before any cropping or editing. From standing up on a ladder above the students you can capture this amazing and simple photo of the students.

To create the wording inside, you can have fun and be creative for this. Maybe, choose a teachers name to write inside, or a favorite quote your teacher or principal really likes. Write your school motto, or add each of the students name along with the school year date. You could add your school name inside the heart, or anything special for you and your classroom or school.

This is a super simple and creative idea for your next classroom school auction, or even create this for a teacher gift. We printed ours at Costco, then framed in a 16×20 frame, then sold at the school silent auction. The teachers would absolutely smitten over the idea and the project sold to help benefit our school and PTA sponsorships. Needless to say, I’m so proud of the kids who followed instructions and let us capture a unique school photo for years to come.

      Aw, thanks Cathy! Honestly it’s so easy to get the kiddos together for classroom photo then frame for the teacher. It’s inexpensive and totally a winner with the teachers!
